Willie isn’t happy about the prospect of someone building an AI data center near his hometown of Abbott, Texas.
So Willie did the oldest old man thing an old man might do.
He posted his objection on Facebook.
Willie isn’t alone.
A lot of people aren’t happy about the prospect of having AI data centers built near their homes.
A new Gallup poll found that 71% of Americans say they don’t want a data center being built where they live, a lot more than the 53% who would oppose construction of a nearby nuclear power plant near their home.
Which means that more Americans are aligned on their dislike of data centers than they are on most pretty much any other issue in their country.
Ironically, they kinda need those nuclear power plants to actually power those AI data centers.
But I digress.
At the same time, more and more Americans are using chatbots. Chatbots that make use of, wait for it, AI data centers. But views about AI and how fast it’s advancing tilt negative even for younger adults
Last year, a PEW research survey found that Americans had the lowest trust in their own government to regulate AI responsibly.
ICYMI: The US has the most AI data centers of any country in the world.
There are 1214 operating data centers in the US with a combined capacity of 57,431 MW, and 1737 planned projects that would add 370,111 MW of additional capacity.
In Willie’s home state of Texas, there has been a data center boom over the past few years, with 300 installations already in operation and a further 250 planned, with facilities centred around Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio.
Only Virginia has more data centers.
That’s a lot of data centers.
However, it turns out that there’s no data center project planned for Abbott, Texas.
Nothing.
No construction.
No plan.
Nothing for Willie to write a sad country song about.
Willie’s home is safe for now.
And like a lot of old man rage on Facebook, his intentions might have been good, but his anger was probably misdirected.
